This bag is a faithful reproduction of the vintage delivery sacks once used by sake shops in the early Showa period of Japan (approximately the late 1920s to 1930s). Traditionally, these bags were used when Sake shop deliver the Sake to their customers and featured the sake’s name printed boldly across the front, so we created our own design with the name “Tsukikage.” Written with the characters for “moon” and “shadow,” tsuki means moon, and kage can mean shadow or reflection. The name was chosen to evoke the poetic, atmospheric stories often imagined behind old sake labels—something quietly beautiful, like the glow of moonlight.
Crafted from sturdy Japanese high quality cotton canvas, the bag is printed on both sides using hand-pulled silk-screen techniques. The rope handles are made of durable cotton, and the openings are reinforced with genuine leather just as the originals were. A piece of thick board is placed inside the bottom so the bag can support heavier items without losing its shape.
Every detail has been reproduced with care to match the bags once carried by sake shop workers—from the materials to the construction. The interior seams are neatly finished to prevent fraying and ensure long-lasting use.
Each bag is produced in a generations-old, family-run workshop located in an old downtown neighborhood of Osaka, an area known for its many temples and long-standing craft traditions.
This bag brings the craftsmanship and nostalgic charm of early-Showa Japan back to life, blending practical durability with a touch of poetic storytelling.
